Do You Have Sore Knees Sore knees, the probable cause and what to do about it Do you have sore knees? Pain in walking or that sore tenderness around the kneecap and knee area that you’ve been feeling. Sore knees may be the result of overuse, though poor form and posture during physical activity, not warming up or cooling down properly and inadequate stretching can be a cause of sore knees. Being overweight can also put you at risk for sore knees and other health problems The most probable cause of sore knees, much more serious, is missing or depleted cartilage. Untreated, this underlying cause of sore knees can lead to other physical difficulties. If you have a sore knee you favor it, putting more weight on the other and thereby throwing more weight on one hip and misaligning the whole body. When we are in our teens and early twenties, there is an abundance of growth hormone which promotes the growth of muscles, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage and except for bumps and scrapes, sore knees are virtually unknown. Collagen, which is produced by the liver, is the building protein for this growth. However, when we get into our mid twenties growth and the growth hormone diminish and stop. Thereafter, the collagen which is produced by the liver is used to maintain the status quo of the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage. Then starting at about age 25, the amount of collagen being produced starts to decrease at 1 to 1½ percent per year so that by the age of 45, the supply of collagen has decreased at least 25 percent. While this is visibly evidenced by aging skin, fine lines, and wrinkles what is not so evident is the fact that the knee cartilage which is primarily collagen has decreased 25 percent or more and now we have the possibility for sore knees and other maladies. If one has been extremely physically active so that the knee has been subjected to an increased amount of stress or injury, the cartilage is further reduced and the normal shock absorber doesn’t absorb the shock anymore and we have bone rubbing on bone causing really sore knees. While the body usually has the tendency and the ability to heal itself, in extreme cases this self healing seems to be nearly impossible or non-existent and outside help is needed. In the cases of sore knees where the problem is a worn, depleted or torn cartilage, collagen therapy has been extremely helpful. However there are fourteen different types of collagen and not all are useful for collagen therapy. That which is known as Type II collagen in scientific testing has been found to have the best restorative value. Thus, taking an effective Type II collagen supplement can relieve the pain and soreness and start the restorative process to relieve sore knees. To quote Dr. Sal Martingano; “I’ve been in practice 17 years. I’ve been asked to share my knowledge of body physiology as it relates to body maintenance. Have you ever considered how the body actually rebuilds itself? The mechanism and substance responsible for accomplishing that task varies with age. Youngsters produce an abundance of growth hormone by the pituitary gland but as we age growth hormone steadily diminishes and the emphasis shifts to a substance called Collagen which is produced by the body and taken in from select food sources. Collagen does its job by converting its natural protein Molecules into the essential amino acids required by the body to build or rebuild body parts. In essence it’s the maintenance juice of the body. There are actually 14 different kinds of collagen altogether, but the primary collagen, the most predominant one, the most medicinal collagen, is collagen Type II” Thank you, doctor. The conclusion to this is that Type II collagen added to the diet will help to prevent or heal sore knees.
